school fundraising season

The stack of fundraising flyers are piling up on the kitchen counter with most coming from the school.

The swim team needs to sell stuff for "athletics" in general though I haven't figured out how the school supports the team other than with a coach. The swim kids buy their own gear as well as having to get their own rides across town for practice and meets.

Then NHS (which I thought was to honor kids for high grades and good citizenship) now requires a "buy in" of either 5 food items sold or $25 out-of-pocket.

I don't even know what the middle school is doing with the cookie dough money. That's just a general schoolwide fundraiser.

The cheapest item on the various lists is the cookie dough at $12.95. A tub of that makes about equal to one homemade batch of cookies. I hate to even think about the $17.00 for cheese pizza or $21.50 for Philly Cheese calzones. Food Lion has Tombstones for $3.99. I haven't even looked at the typical charge for frozen sandwiches, since I always make those from scratch.

Yes. I know there's a mark up with money going to the school, but that's some high priced food.

There's no way I'm hitting up family and friends with those kinds of prices. This is a mostly blue collar town with a lot of folks on lay off - both temporary and permanent depending on the business. It's one thing to ask about a candy bar at $1 (and half the profit goes to the organization) and quite another to sell frozen pretzels for $16.50 (with $5 going to the school).

Frankly, I'm glad NHS flat said that the price is $25. I'll just write out the check. That's better than over $60 (at best) with my freezor packed full as it is.

I think it's wrong to charge a kid to be in NHS, but that's the way it is. I hope the kids who earned that honor can sell five items or have $25 to spare.

I hope the other school groups and those kid organizations outside school give the "buy out" price too. I'd rather just pay a fee than have to buy junk I don't want or need.
