Tasty Southern Dessert Made with Angel Food Cake and Strawberries

Punch Bowl Strawberry Cake is traditionally made in an old fashioned glass punch bowl. You can use a large serving bowl instead, and the unique cake is still very pretty

There are several versions of punch bowl cake. Some punch bowl cake recipe call for different types of base cakes (pound cake for example). Some include mixed puddings. Other build on different fruits or combinations.

Punch Bowl Strawberry Cake is one of the lighter Southern punch bowl cakes. Generally this yummy cake is made during strawberry season with fresh strawberries, but it can also be made with frozen berries or with canned strawberries in sauce. Just omit the glaze pack in the recipe if using berries that already have a sauce.

Southern Punch Bowl Fresh Strawberry Cake Recipe

Directions:

  1. Tear the angel food cake into bite sized pieces in a large bowl. This is not the serving bowl. The punch bowl cake is assembled later.
  2. Mix together 1 container of Cool Whip, sour cream, evaporated milk, and powdered sugar until smooth.
  3. Fold the Cool Whip mix into the cake pieces and stir.
  4. In a smaller bowl, pour the glaze and mix the strawberries in with the glaze. You may want to reserve a few berries (sans glaze) to place around on the top of the cake at the end.
  5. In a large punch bowl or large serving bowl, layer half the cake mixture, then half the strawberries with glaze, cake mixture, strawberries with glaze.
  6. Smooth the second container of Cool Whip on top like a frosting or icing.
  7. Place a few reserved strawberries on top if you wish.
  8. Chill for a few hours before serving.

* If you’re not familiar with strawberry glaze, it’s often sold in little clear bags in the produce season when strawberries are ripe. Different brands come in different sized packets and some are in glass jars as well. The amount on this ingredient can vary a bit, but you want close 16 ounces of glaze.
