When folks gather for special meals in the South, there's likely to be a sweet potato pie on the dessert table. Little wonder. It's an easy and inexpensive pie to make.

Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

Directions:

  1. Boil sweet potatoes in a big pan of water. Peel the sweet potatoes. Mash well.
  2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  3. Place mashed sweet potatoes in a big mixing bowl and add sugar, corn syrup, cinnamon and salt. Mix well with a mixer.
  4. Add eggs, butter, milk and vanilla and mix well.
  5. Pour sweet potato mixture into prepared pie shell. This can be a homemade pie shell, a frozen pie shell (thawed) or a refrigerator roll out crust.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated 425 degree F oven. Then reduce heat to 350 degrees F and bake for 25 to 35 minutes. The middle should be firm. Insert a knife in the very center. If it comes out clean, the pie is done.

If you don't feel like making a pie crust or running to the store to get one, then try a Sweet Potato Casserole. It's similar to Sweet Potato Pie, but it has a crumble top instead of having a crust. Sweet Potato Casserole is typically served as a side dish with the meal, but it could certainly be served as a dessert.

Other classic Southern pie recipes:

Southern Pumpkin Pie - Pumpkin and sweet potato pies are similar. There are some taste differences, but both are popular pies in the South. This pumpkin pie recipe is a traditional pumpkin pie served on Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as at pot luck dinners.

Southern Pecan Pie - Pecan Pie is an all round favorite for the dinner table or for giving as gifts. There are many variations, but this is a classic version with a sweet filling.

Southern Crumble Top Apple Pie - Another fall and winter classic in the South, Crumble Top Apple Pie is easier to make than apple pies with lattice tops. The crumble top is very tasty too - nice and crisp to compliment the tart/sweet apples.
