Ground Beef and Apples Combine for a Tasty Meatloaf

Meat Loaf is a popular main dish in the South, and cold slices of meat loaf are great served the next day on sandwich white bread.

Visit any diner or meat ‘n three in the South, and you’ll probably see a meat loaf option or plate. Since ground beef is relatively inexpensive, hamburger dishes are popular. And, meat loaf is an area favorite.

Cooks in the South also bake meat loaf at home, since meat loaf is a simple dish to make. Most often meat loaf has extra ingredients which stretch the meat or make the meat go further during hard economic times, and the extra ingredients added by Southern cooks also give family recipe meat loafs personality.

Although various breads and crackers or vegetables like onions and green peppers are mixed with ground beef to make meat loaf, Southerners also add more unique ingredients like fresh mountain apples.

Fresh Apple Meat Loaf is a flavorful ground beef dish. The unique meat loaf is moist and bursting with favor. The sweetness of the apples compliments the ground hamburger for a special and memorable meatloaf.

Fresh Apple Meat Loaf Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ pounds ground leaf (lean is best)
  • 1 ½ cups Hillshire Farms stuffing mix or homemade bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 small onion cut fine
  • 3 TBS horseradish
  • 2 tsp yellow mustard
  • ¾ cup catsup
  • 3 eggs beaten
  • 2 cups apples chopped fine

Directions:

  1. Chop onions and apples into very small pieces.
  2. Beat eggs.
  3. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix. Meat loaf is most easily mixed by hand. Simply squeeze the meat through your fingers until all the ingredients are mixed in evenly.
  4. Shape the meat mixture into a large oval to match the size and shape of a loaf pan.
  5. Place the meat loaf into a standard 9 x 5 inch bread loaf pan.
  6. Bake for an hour and 15 minutes at 350 degrees F or until cooked through and nicely browed on the outside.
  7. If there’s extra grease around the meatloaf (when using ground beef with a higher fat ratio), drain the fat off.
  8. Place apple meat loaf on a platter, slice and serve.
