Southern Rum Balls are Easy to Make and Delightfully Delicious

Dec 24, 2008 Cyndi Allison

Sinfully rich rum balls are a holiday favorite and also easy to make.

Rum balls are quite popular in the South, especially around Christmas. Folks who would never mix up a cocktail enjoy a little hint of the spirits in candy form.

There are a variety of rum ball recipes floating around and traded around by Southern cooks, but chocolate flavored rum balls are traditional and particularly popular.

This is a no-bake rum ball recipe, so that makes is especially convenient to make. Do plan ahead and make the rum balls at least a day before serving, so the flavors have time to settle.

Southern Rum Ball Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chocolate chips – semisweet (around 6 ounces)
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 TBS corn syrup (Karo brand is popular in the South)
  • 1/3 cup rum (any brand is fine – Meyers Rum is especially rich and good)
  • 2 ½ cups chocolate wafers crumbled fine (can use regular vanilla wafers instead)
  • 1 cup pecans – finely chopped (can substitute other nuts)
  • 2 TBS cocoa powder (unsweetened in baking section)
  • 3 TBS regular table sugar (white granulated)

Directions:

  1. Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler on low, so the chocolate does not scorch. Can add just a drip of vegetable oil if chips are dry and not melting well.
  2. Combine the melted chocolate with the powdered sugar, corn syrup, and rum in a medium mixing bowl and stir.
  3. Add chocolate or vanilla wafers and nuts and mix until well blended.
  4. Roll into small balls (a bit smaller than ping-pong balls).
  5. Mix together the cocoa powder and sugar on a flat plate or bowl with sides and then roll rum balls in the mixture. Shake off excess powdering.
  6. Put the rum balls in a Tupperware or other airtight container and store for a day or more before serving.

*This is a fairly large recipe. Expect around 50 rum balls, depending on how generous the rum balls are rolled.
