Char-Broil has been manufacturing bbq grills for over 60 years and produces some of the best selling gas grills on the market.

The Commercial Gas Grill series by Char-Broil offers a wide range of barbeque options to meet different home grilling styles and interchangeable replacement parts which means that if a grill part fails or gets broken, it’s possible to make repairs rather than buying a new grill.

Grill Body Styles in the Commercial Gas Series

Char-Broil offers the popular stainless-steel in the commercial grills with 400-series metal (not as rust resistant as 300-series) and lower-gauge (better quality) metal for the hood. Some grill models are also available in porcelain-enamel coated which provides better protection from the elements (and fewer problems with rust).

Work spaces on both sides vary in size depending on the model number with some of the commercial grills having a left side burner with a hinged cover to protect the heating element from the weather and spills.

Storage space under the grill is pretty roomy, so some grilling tools can be stored below with the standard propane gas bottle (or to a natural gas line with a converter kit). Hinged doors hide the gas bottle and grill accessories, so the grill looks neat and organized even for grillers who tend to pack rat grill gear.

Burners on the Char-Broil Commercial Grills

Both three burner and four burner models are available in the commercial line by Char-Broil. Both configurations work well for grilling with some hot spots to the back of the units. The four burner models reach higher temperatures and have more intense heat for those who like to sear meats, but the three burner models will also caramelize foods. Adding the extra burner on the four burner also allows for more flexibility, so grill chefs who like to grill low and slow will like the ability to custom heat with one or all burners on and at different temperatures.

Some models in the commercial series have the traditional tented baffles while others have solid or perforated baffles to absorb and direct the heat for infrared grilling. The infrared baffles in the commercial series differ from the high end kitchen infrared burners in that the high end infrared grills use coating directly on the burners rather than using metal barriers to direct heat. One advantage to having the infrared in the baffles rather than directly coating the burners is that there are more options than with coated infrared burners which do not work well with low temperature grilling.

Burners are powered by push button starters that require standard sized batteries for automatic ignition. In the case of a starter failure or if the batteries run low, the grill can be fired manually with a match or cigarette lighter.

Grilling the Commercial Series Barbecues

The Char-Broil Commercial BBQ Grills are solid performers with overall even heating and adjustability of temperatures with the adjustment knobs (very similar to indoor store heating knobs). The units tend to heat just a little higher toward the back, but the temperature difference is small and likely only noticeable when doing delicate foods like fish. The adjustability means that steaks can be seared over a high burner and then finished off over lower heat under other burners.

Foods do not get the charcoal smoked flavor, of course, since the commercial grills as powered by gas. An aluminum foil of soaked wood chips can be placed on the side of the generous grate space to add a touch of smoke flavor. Since the grills are large, most grill chefs will have the extra space to add the smoke packet if desired.

Clean Up of the Char-Broil Commercial Grills

Char-Broil commercial grills run about average in terms of clean up, so for grillers who hate the elbow grease part, the Char-Broil Big Red Infrared Grill might be a better bet but more expensive. With a good grill cleaning brush and if the grill is cleaned before it completely cools, keeping the Char-Broil Commercial is not overly difficult.

Is a Char-Broil Commercial Grill the Right Grill?

The commercial series grills by Char-Broil are solid grills that are easy to use and produce tasty gas grilled foods. They are roomy grills with good work space areas and storage. Since the barbecue grills are produced by a big name grill company and since the grill line is large with a variety of options, support is good and replacement parts are readily available.
