Cheerwine and the Apple Baking Company have teamed up with a new southern ready made cake.

Cheerwine cakes have just gone on the market in Salisbury, North Carolina and surrounding areas. The brand new cake is made by the Apple Baking Company using a regional favorite soft drink, Cheerwine, as the key ingredient.

About Cheerwine

Cheerwine has long been a favorite soda in the Carolinas and along the southeastern coast and has recently been marketed in other areas. Cheerwine has been compared to cherry cola, but the flavor is unique. Many soft drinks taste similar to those produced by other companies (consider the Pepsi/Coke taste challenges), but Cheerwine has a one-of-a-kind flavor.

About the Apple Baking Company

The Apple Baking Company is a small business located in the piedmont of North Carolina. They are best known for making Apple Uglies (and other fruit based “ugly” products) but also bake and sell various cakes like pound cake. Products can be found in convenience and country stores in the South.

Getting Together

For years, home cooks have made various versions of Cheerwine Cake. Some of the Cheerwine Cakes are made from boxed cake mixeswhile others are from scratch. The resulting cakes look similar to Red Velvet Cake (another Southern favorite), but the soft drink gives this Cheerwine baked good a different texture, feel, and taste. Like the soft drink, Cheerwine Cake is unique.

The Carolina Bottling Company (maker and distributor of Cheerwine and other regional sodas) and the Apple Baking Company decided to build on the popularity of the spontaneous "cake making" of Southern cooks and create a bakery cake with Cheerwine as the key ingredient.

Several versions were tested, and a rich crème cake recipe was selected. Company officials say that the cake could be identified as a Cheerwine Cake by taste testers, and they wanted to stay true to the idea of having a cake flavored by Cheerwine.

Cheerwine Cake

Cheerwine Cake has just gone on the market (October 2008), and it’s hard to find currently. Representatives from the company say the new cake is selling as fast as they can produce it.

Right now, Cheerwine Cake is available at select stores in the Salisbury, North Carolina area and at the bakery headquarters. The cake which is sold by the slice, half cake, and full cake will also be available at the Apple Baking Company web site.

I got around to trying a piece of this from a vending machine. I love cheerwine.. and I love cakes.. so I figured this would be a good way to spend a dollar..
Unfortunately.. no. This didn't taste like cake or cheerwine and was completely disgusting. I don't think it would have been so hard to make this work.
